Starbucks to close 500 more shops

Coffee chain Starbucks plans to shut 500 stores in the US on top of the 100 closures it had already announced. Up to 12,000 full and part-time jobs will go, although Starbucks will try to move staff into other stores. While it is closing underperforming stores, the company is still opening new US outlets, although it is cutting back from 250 to 200 next year.

Starbucks opened many stores in areas which have since been hard-hit by the housing slump such as Florida. About 70% of the outlets scheduled to be closed have only been open since 2006. The company has been hard-hit by US consumers feeling the pinch and cutting back on their spending on expensive coffee.

It is disrupting the lives of the people who have worked so hard to deliver superior service to our customers, says Howard Schultz, Starbucks chief executive.

"Everything seems to be heading for the worst. It is very important for the younger generations to be very careful with their choices and decisions for the right college and right field of studies or they will regret it later."

UK Job Market Opportunities Declining

The UK job market weakened rapidly in November as permanent placements declined at a record rate, a new survey from Markit Economics suggests.

The drop in permanent and temporary jobs was the fastest recorded in the survey's 11-year history. The figures provide evidence of the rapid slowdown in the UK economy and suggest unemployment rates will rise.

"The UK jobs market is heading downhill at breakneck speed," said Mike Stevens at KPMG, a sponsor of the survey. The report also showed record survey falls in permanent salaries and temporary staff pay rates.

"Employers in almost all sectors have drastically cut recruitment plans and are shedding contract and temporary staff as fast as they can," Mr Stevens added. Permanent placements declined for an eighth consecutive month in November, with the rate of contraction accelerating to a new survey record.

Temporary and contract staff billings also fell by record levels, as did demand for permanent and temporary staff. The only sector to avoid the downturn was nursing and medical care. Unsurprisingly, record rises in staff availability were also recorded.
The monthly survey, sponsored by the Recruitment and Employment Federation and accountancy firm KPMG, features original data collected by Markit Economics from 400 UK recruitment and employment consultancies.

Honda Facing Serious Financial Crisis

Honda is pulling out of Formula One, blaming the world economic crisis for plans to sell its team. Sources told BBC Sport the team were "optimistic" they would continue, but an investor had not yet been found. The decision leaves Englishman Jenson Button and 2009 team-mate Rubens Barrichello without drives, with only a few mid-ranking seats still available.

Honda, which spent more than £300m a year on F1, said it would also no longer supply the sport with engines.
A deadline of January has been set to find a buyer but workers at Honda's Brackley base have been told to expect redundancy letters before Christmas.

"Honda Motor Co. has come to the conclusion that we will withdraw from all Formula One activities, making 2008 the last season for participation," said Honda president Takeo Fukui at an emotional press conference.
"This difficult decision has been made in light of the quickly deteriorating operating environment facing the global auto industry... and the sudden contraction of the world economies," he added.

"Honda must protect its core business activities and secure the long term as widespread uncertainties in the economics around the globe continue to mount." According to the Reuters news agency, team bosses Ross Brawn and Nick Fry told a meeting of the Formula One Teams' Association: "They have a month to find a buyer, otherwise they are closing the team."

If no buyer is found, Honda's decision will leave F1 with just 18 cars on the grid next season. Tough luck ahead for years to come.

Credit Suisse - Cutting Jobs

Troubled Swiss banking giant Credit Suisse has said it is shedding another 5,300 jobs from its global workforce. Most of the jobs being lost are in investment banking. The firm has already shed 1,800 posts this year. The bank has struggled since the onset of the financial crisis and has been forced to write off assets worth billions owing to bad loans.

It said it had a net loss of about 3bn Swiss francs ($2.5bn; £1.7bn) in the two months to the end of November. Credit Suisse said the loss, primarily in investment banking, was due to adverse market conditions and risk reduction. In addition it will take a restructuring charge of 900m Swiss francs.

"Investment banking had a significant pretax loss, reflecting the challenging conditions in the financial markets in the quarter and the costs associated with risk reduction," Credit Suisse said in a statement. Without state aid

The bank is shedding 11% of its workforce as it strives to make savings of 2bn Swiss francs. These job cuts will take place by the middle of the next year, the bank announced. On Monday it said that it would cut 650 jobs from its UK workforce.
Credit Suisse said on Thursday that its chief executive and other top managers will not receive salary bonuses for 2008.
So far Credit Swiss has managed to weather the global financial crisis without state aid.

Even accounting industry is badly affected.

Infineon Technology - Facing Big Loss

Infineon Technology is cutting jobs. German chipmaker Infineon Technologies has posted its seventh straight quarterly net loss because of falling chip prices and weakening demand. The firm reported a net loss of 763m euros ($970m, £652m) in the quarter to the end of September, more than analysts had expected.

Infineon has been hit hard by falling demand from troubled carmakers, its key customer group. The company's shares have fallen almost 80% this year. Shares in Infineon closed down 39.6% at 1 euro on the Dax stock exchange in Frankfurt.

Job cuts
Infineon said it expected revenues from continuing operations to decline by 30% in its next financial quarter. The firm's net loss for the whole of the 2008 financial year reached 2.9bn euros, compared with a 347m euros loss in the previous year. In July, Infineon unveiled plans to cut 3,000 jobs, or about 10% of its total workforce, as the firm looks to cut costs. Infineon is trying to sell its memory-chip unit Qimonda, which has been a drag on its business.

US Carmaker Heading Bankruptcy

Bad News to Engineering Students. Is getting harder to get a job in this industry.

The so-called Detroit Three of troubled US carmakers have asked for a combined total of $34bn (£22.8bn; 26.8bn euros).
Slashing costs, reducing levels of debt and investing in greener technologies form the centre-piece of each proposal.
The chief executives of Ford and GM have even offered to work for $1 a year if Congress approves the emergency aid.

Sales at all three of the carmakers have plunged as US consumers tighten their belts in the face of the severe economic downturn. Ford sold 31% fewer light vehicles in November compared with the same month last year. GM suffered a 41% drop in sales for the month, while Chrysler fared worse still, with sales plummeting 47%.

Tough task

Analysts say the poor sales figures have highlighted what a tough task this will be. "Every manufacturer is posting awful numbers and we are no exception," said Mark LeNeve of GM North America.

Swedish government has ruled out a takeover of Volvo if Ford sells it Indeed, Honda's year-on-year US sales fell by 32% in November, while Toyota's fell by 34%.

"The consumer is scared and sitting on the sideline. We need appropriate economic stimulus to get the consumer back in the game," Mr LeNeve added.

But the White House has already expressed scepticism about the bail-out proposals. "We are sticking to our guns that the companies have to prove that they are viable before taxpayer dollars should be given to them," said White House press secretary Dana Perino. And the Swedish government has ruled out a takeover of Volvo if Ford is unable to sell it.

Automotive Engineering Going Downtrend

German car downturn 'worst ever'

The downturn in the German car market is "at a pace and magnitude that has never happened before", the country's main auto trade body has warned. As a result, the German Association of the Automotive Industry said new car sales in 2009 are expected to be the worst since reunification in 1990. It added that Volkswagen, Daimler and Porsche will all have to cut output, which will "impact" on workers.

Last week Porsche delayed its takeover of Volkswagen, blaming falling sales. Porsche said there were signs of a "serious slump" in global demand.

Challenging

Volkswagen itself has warned that the current sales environment is "difficult", while Daimler, owner of Mercedes-Benz, said the situation is "very challenging indeed". German car sales are expected to slip to 2.9 million next year, down from the expected 3.1 million for 2008, says the trade body.

Car sales are also lower across Europe, with Italy's Fiat warning that its 2009 profits could fall by 65%. Meanwhile Toyota, Honda and Nissan are all trimming production at their European plants.

US loan request
In the US, the big three American car firms - General Motors (GM), Ford and Chrysler - have submitted proposals to Congress for multi-billion dollar loans they say are vital to their survival. They have asked for a combined total of $34bn (£22.8bn; 26.8bn euros). Meanwhile, the Swedish government has said it would be prepared to offer financial support to Ford subsidiary Volvo, and GM unit Saab. However, it said it would not be interested in nationalising the two companies.

In short automotive engineering is not looking very bright for the next 5 years ahead

Carver - Next Generation of Vehicle

The Carver One feels just as much at ease turning corners, conquering roundabouts and beating traffic jams, as it does on curvy country roads or endless straights, far away from the world and its worries.

Its sporty engine gives it just the right power in proportion to its weight, reaching a top speed of 185 km/h (115 mph) while its average fuel consumption remains at a very modest 6 L/100 km (40 UK mpg).

But speed on the straights isn’t everything... Go for the corners, that’s where the Carver One pulls out all the stops!

It banks from left to right in just a second. This unrivalled agility lets you cope with any emergency situation, avoid obstacles, and makes for sheer exhilarating fun.

And what fun it is: virtually unrestricted manoeuvrability, surfing through traffic, snowboarding roundabouts and pivoting corners. It is like riding your own roller coaster designed as you carve along. It is like flying a glider at ground level. It is like playing the lead in your own version of Top Gun. It is all this and much, much more.

Adobe Certified Expert - Future of IT Expert

Well, the integration between all the tools is something that we did when we brought Macromedia and Adobe together. And with CS3 we were able to do some of that integration, but with CS4 we were able to dramatically move the integration along. The other thing is with Flash Player 10 we added a lot of new innovative expressiveness inside that release. That includes things like filter effects, so you can take the same language used in After Effects to do production time video effects -- so you're able to do that now live at runtime in the Flash Player. So that's a really big change in the ability to make those effects interactive if you decide to change them later. But it's a lot of tooling inside the Flash Player.

The other thing is we've integrated 3-D effects in Flash Player 10, so you can now do 3-D transformations and you can have a lot of great 3-D control, and across CS4 3-D is a pervasive element of the tooling. Even within Photoshop you can bring in a 3-D model now and you can actually paint in 3-D on the model. And that is amazing to see that work.

The other area is text. In Flash Player 10 we've put a whole new text engine in Flash. And that came from the engineers working on InDesign, so we've got decades of experience in managing text and layout and publishing, and we've applied all that experience to making the text engine in Flash extremely world class. You can do kerning and you have control over the line breaking and you can do flowing of text across columns and you can use any font you want. So in terms of rendering text on the screen, Flash is now a huge step ahead. And that's supported across the tooling as well

Also what we're doing is we're starting to integrate services with the tooling. So in addition of features in the tools we are now integrating hosted services as part of the tools experience. So if you are using Creative Suite and using Dreamweaver and you want to understand how your Web page is going to actually look across browsers, you used to have to have all the different browsers on your computer and run Linux, Macintosh and Windows to test your pages. It was a pretty laborious process. So what we're doing now is we're hosting a browser testing solution or a way to simulate what the browsers look like. That's an example of how we're providing services with the tools and that's a big shift in how we're actually building our software now. We're really embracing hosted services.

Another area is collaboration. People are starting to work together a lot more on the Web. So our tools are starting to support that collaboration -- whether that's the formats between the tools or working more seamlessly, which we're doing with interactive graphics now. There's a really seamless way to exchange that between the tools using something called FXG, which is an exchange format within the tools.

But also in terms of real-time collaboration...If you're working with someone and you want to jump into a screen-sharing session with that person, we've got something called ConnectNow. So you can go from Photoshop and you can go collaborate with somebody else then you can share your screen and talk about it with live audio and video.

It is definitely an advantage to be an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE).

Adobe Conquering Mobile Phones Industry

Many cell phones today use a simpler version known as Flash Lite. But while that works well for the user interface on the phone, the differences among various mobile devices, wireless carriers and mobile operating systems mean that users have widely inconsistent experiences when they try to access video and other content on the Internet.

Adobe signed up Nokia, Motorola, Verizon, Cisco and other major companies for what it calls the Open Screen Project, in which Adobe agreed to waive licensing fees and other restrictions on some of its software. It was a smart move, according to Michael Gartenberg, an industry analyst for Jupitermedia and MobileDevicesToday.com.

"It makes great sense for Adobe to be moving Flash into the mobile space in a bigger way," Gartenberg said. While consumers want a "richer experience" on their phones, he added, "right now, the mobile market is fragmented."

But Gartenberg warned that Microsoft and other software makers are also vying for a strong mobile presence. Apple has not included Flash in its iPhone, although Narayen said Adobe is developing a version for Apple products. Gartenberg predicted other competitors will announce new mobile software at this week's trade show.

While consumers don't pay for Flash, Adobe profits when developers use its software. In addition to licensing fees, the company sells authoring tools that developers can use to create and test their applications, and server software that lets broadcasters stream video and other content to Internet users.

Again, Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) are in high demand!

Adobe Flash For Apple iPhone

At the Flash On The Beach (FOTB) conference in Brighton, Sr. Director of Engineering at Adobe Systems Paul Betlem, confirmed that Adobe is indeed developing a Flash Player for the iPhone. However, Apple calls the shots as to when it'll be available.

The Town Hall meeting sessions are usually a great source of Adobe information and the one at this years Flash On The Beach conference was no exception. The session was full of nuggets for Flash users, but the most relevant piece of information for others was about Flash Player for the iPhone. Upon a direct question from the audience, Paul Betlem for the first time publicly confirmed that Adobe is actively developing a Flash Player for Apple's popular phone. He said (not direct quote) "My team is working on Flash on the iPhone, but it's a closed platform." He noted that Apple makes all the decisions, so in other words, the ball is in Apple's yard at this time. If Apple says yes, Adobe will have the player available in a very short time.

So if you invest and make yourself as an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) then you might be in luck because you just might be able to work for either Adobe Systems or Apple Computers.

University of Oxford - #1 in UK

There are over 20,000 students at Oxford, including 11,917 undergraduates and 7,350 postgraduates.
Oxford has one of the lowest drop-out rates in the UK: latest figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) show that only 1.2 per cent of students discontinued their course, compared with the national rate of 8.6 per cent. 53 per cent of undergraduates are studying for degrees in the humanities and social sciences, and 43 per cent in medical, mathematical, physical and life sciences.

The rest are studying for undergraduate level diplomas and certificates offered by the Department for Continuing Education.
The tutorial is at the core of undergraduate teaching and learning at Oxford. It offers students a unique learning experience in which they meet regularly with their tutor, either on a one-to-one basis or with one or two other students. Undergraduates attend, on average, one hour-long tutorial every week and undertake a considerable number of hours’ preparatory work for each tutorial, including background reading, essay-writing and problem-solving.

At graduate level, 37 per cent of students are studying for higher degrees in the medical, mathematical physical and life sciences and 56 per cent in the humanities and social sciences. The rest are studying for postgraduate certificates and diplomas offered by the Deparment for Continuing Education.

Oxford University graduates are among the most employable in the UK: our employment rate is over 95 per cent, in contrast to the UK average of 93.8 per cent. Oxford undergraduates and postgraduates enter a wide range of occupations with nearly 80 per cent securing managerial, professional or associate professional posts.

Over 45 per cent of students completing an undergraduate degree go on to further study compared with a national average of just 23 per cent. Every year more than 15,000 people take part in courses offered by the Department for Continuing Education, making Oxford University the fourth largest provider of continuing education in the UK.

How hybrid car works?

This is a great knowledge to share. Let me share my knowledge with you, have you pulled your car up to the gas pump lately and been shocked by the high price of gasoline? As the pump clicked past $70, $90, $110 or even $150, maybe you thought about trading in your car for something that gets better mileage. Or maybe you're worried that your car is contributing to the greenhouse effect.

The auto industry has the technology to address these concerns. It's the hybrid car. There are a lot of hybrid models on the market these days, and most automobile manufacturers have announced plans to manufacture their own versions.

How does a hybrid automobile work? What goes on under the hood to give you 50 or 60 more km per litre than the standard automobile? And does it pollute less just because it gets better gas mileage? In this article, I'll help you understand how this technology works, and we'll even give you some tips on how to drive a hybrid car for maximum efficiency. Many people have probably owned a hybrid vehicle at some point. For example, a mo-ped (a motorized pedal bike) is a type of hybrid because it combines the power of a gasoline engine with the pedal power of its rider. In fact, hybrid vehicles are all around us. Most of the locomotives we see pulling trains are diesel-electric hybrids. Cities like Seattle have diesel-electric buses -- these can draw electric power from overhead wires or run on diesel when they are away from the wires. Giant mining trucks are often diesel-electric hybrids. Submarines are also hybrid vehicles -- some are nuclear-electric and some are diesel-electric. Any vehicle that combines two or more sources of power that can directly or indirectly provide propulsion power is a hybrid. Most hybrid cars on the road right now are gasoline-electric hybrids, although French car maker PSA Peugeot Citroen has two diesel-electric hybrid cars in the works. Watch out for more soon...

Can electric car takes over the road?

Well as a teacher, I think the progression toward hybrid and electric cars seems like a natural step in the evolution of automobile technology. Analysts aren't predicting a drop in oil and gasoline prices anytime soon, effectively shifting car manufacturers into high gear to find the next best way to power vehicles. If the recent concept cars revealed by major automakers are accurate predictors, Lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) may be that magic bullet.

Take, for instance, the Chevrolet Volt. This is General Motors' plug-in hybrid concept car designed to run for 40-mile (64.3-kilometer) stretches entirely off of Li-ion batteries. After that, a small gas engine will take over for another 600 miles (965 kilometers). That means many people could complete their daily commute without burning a drop of gas. In addition, the company plans to start cranking them out en masse by 2010. And Chevrolet isn't alone in the Li-ion trend. Jeep, Cadillac, Dodge, Land Rover, Chrysler and Saturn all previewed 2008 concept cars that feature Li-ion battery packs for greener driving.

Why this fawning over Li-ion batteries in the first place? The Toyota Prius and two new hybrids the company unveiled in June 2008 use a nickel-metal-hydride battery. According to the most recent EPA standards, the Prius gets a combined 46 miles per gallon -- not to mention that it has sold like hotcakes.

Smart Car

The project, started by Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch, was nicknamed the "Swatchmobile". The name Smart is an acronym for Swatch Mercedes ART.[1] Intended to use innovative features (such as a hybrid engine) and be affordable for young people, the Smart had similar design objective to the Citroën 2CV of the 1940s.

To me, I don't really fancy it as it is not practical.

Reasons Why People Get Rich

What are the reasons? Do you know any? This video seems to have the answer.

Living In Luxury In The World? Could it be for you?

Who ever know that living in overseas could be this expensive? Let's learn.

Luxury Property?

Prices of property keep skyrocketing. Why and where?

The Super Rich - David Beckham

He is the richest football player I ever know. Do you know anyone else? Let's see how rich he really is, shall we?

Well the Korean car maker is really serious into challenging. They keep pushing themselves to produce better looking cars. But I wonder if they could last as they looks?

Moto Racing

If you think you have the guts, race on the track. Don't use your Honda EX5 or Yamaha Cub racing on the road. It is dangerous and uncool. It looks like a fool. If you really want to race, be a professional. Like him. Valentino Rossi.

Beauty and The Money

When you come to styling, good looking and being cool. BMW is the name. You have to know that this car X5 is big. Big in everything. The lights, the wheels, the engine, the space. Yes not to forget, consuming plenty of petrol too. You got to be extremely rich to be able to own this. My conclusion, a beautiful car.

German Technology

Albert Einstein says that "If you don't risk in life, you risk losing more in life". Great words but not many understands, except, this German Car Maker. The VW. They make Golf GTi. One of the great cars money can buy. The Germans are really great engineers. Therefore, their engineering knowledge must be profund.

Another Great Invention Of Knowledge

This is a great phone. Really great functions with great looks. Smart people from Apple Computers made this. But, be careful, because the one which is on sale are usually smuggled. This phone only cost about RM 800 ++. Therefore don't be a fool into buy one now. Besides, the new iPhone 3G is coming.

Time For Perfection

I have always amaze with the creation of time. Time controls everything. Some people waste their time away without knowing that they waste it. Therefore the next time you decide to do anything, think again to check whether it is wasting your time.

Time is Precious

The invention of time is something I never understand. All I only know is that I get older with time. Therefore the only thing I can do is to work as hard as I could with every hour by being more productive. What about you?

Anyone Can Be A Champion

When you push yourself hard enough, nothing seems to be impossible. Just set your dreams and go get it. It will happen. Just look at these young japanese kids. They are not afraid to challenge the big kids.

Taking Things To The Extreme

These athletes take their sports very seriously. They do it because they want to be the best in their industry. I think everyone ought to take their life seriously because you only live once. Give your best to be the best.

The Best In Basketball

If you enjoy playing basketball, then I think is great. If you just enjoy playing for fun and neglect your studies, then it might not be a good idea unless you have great talent like him. If you don't, then studying hard is a better option. Michael Jordan is not only a great athlete but he also graduated from a university. So, who says that it is not important to study? Think again.
